BITTER PILL: FACULTY CRUNCH AILS MEDICAL COLLEGES ACROSS COUNTRY. (ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE HANS INDIA)

This article examines the current state of medical education in India, highlighting the urgent push to increase the number of medical colleges and improve the doctor-patient ratio. However, in this pursuit, quality is often sacrificed for quantity, resulting in a society that suffers in the long term from inadequately trained doctors providing their services. Governments are determined to establish one AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in each state, while state governments are setting up one medical college per district. There is a significant lack of staff, infrastructure, laboratory materials, clinical input, and accreditation standards. Even the well-known AIIMS in various states face these challenges. This article, published in The Hans India on 17th October 2025, serves as an eye-opener regarding another aspect of the country’s disastrous medical health policies. Politicians and bureaucrats have made little progress in enhancing health services over the decades since independence, regardless of the political party in power.
